Hey Hunger Banquet Crew,
I just wanted to send you a quick email. I ran into Samual Kimani last night at dinner and just thought I would pass along some updates. Samuel is the director and co-founder of Tumaini Children's Center and I've been working with him (along with many others) over the past few months trying to develop a model that works better to address the issues street kids face here in Eldoret. Tumaini is in such a pivotal place right now. They have just purchased an acre of land outside of town and have finished construction on a building that will be able to not only provide a place for kids to "drop-in" during the day, but also house them during the night and provide tailored education within a safe environment build for street kids.
We are intending to open up the NEW Tumaini Children's Center with money raised in our holiday fundraising campaign. The building is there, all we need are beds and food. Last night, there was a round up of some of these street kids. When I talked to Samuel, he said 27 of them stayed over night in jail and when he went to visit them, they were begging to be taken to Tumaini. There just isn't much in the way of social support for these kids, and they fall through the cracks. It just seems ridiculous.
Anyway, I guess I just wanted to pass this along to you as you work on Hungar Banquet preparations. Tumaini relies heavily on private donations, in addition to grant funding. And every little bit that is raised really DOES have a tangible impact, even if you don't get to see it.
So.....thanks again for all the things you do and for volunteering to lead the Hungar Banquet this year. I saw the flier that was emailed around and it looked great! If you need any of the graphics we used last year updated, let me know. I'm happy to help any way you think I can from here!
